Keeping In Touch
This week I'm going to be talking about keeping in touch with your clients and prospects. Lately I've been getting a lot of calls and email from people who've been faithful subscribers to this ezine that want to hire me even though I've never met them. They live in other parts of the country and a couple even live in other countries so I've never had the pleasure of speaking with them or even communicating via email. Out of the blue, they contacted me wanting to hire me to help them with their web site marketing and web site design. They said they feel like they know me because they've been reading my ezine and "how to" articles on the internet. I can't tell you how great it is when complete strangers trust you enough to want to hire you even though there's only been a one-way communication link.

Keeping In Touch
Why is it important to keep in touch with your clients and prospects on a regular basis? Why is it important to keep your name in front of them periodically even if you're not promoting one of your products or services?
The Super Bowl was just 33 days ago. Who can tell me who played in the Super Bowl? An even tougher question is what was the final score? Where was the game played? Companies spent billions of dollars creating advertising campaigns for the Super Bowl. Remember the incredible buzz that was created leading up to the game? Ads and promotions were everywhere. Television, radio, newspapers, magazines, the internet and even the floor in your supermarket was full of Super Bowl promotions.
Why don't we remember who played in the game? Why don't we even remember our favorite commercials from the game? The media even spent the week after the game talking about the commercials picking the winners and losers. Well think about what's happened in your life during the past month? So much happens to all of us every day and we're constantly bombarded with new information. Experts say we make more decisions in a month than our grandparents made in their entire lifetime.
Life moves very fast and the media seems to move even faster. Everyone is constantly clamoring for our attention. Email, voicemail, cell phones, and pagers interrupt our thought process constantly. When we weren't responding to email and voicemail fast enough, they invented instant messaging and text messaging.
There are more commercials on television and radio than ever. The typical 30 minute television show is now only 18 minutes long if you cut out the commercials. If that's not bad enough, they promote their network constantly with a logo at the bottom of the screen and now they're promoting other television shows on the bottom of the screen. When you watch the news, they stream text across the bottom of the screen while they're reading other news to you.
Can you say "information overload?" No wonder we forget what day of the week it is! Take a look around today and notice how many ads you're exposed to and how they're getting their message out. Count how many times you're interrupted by email, phone calls and other distractions today. How can you expect your clients and prospects to remember your name if you don't keep in touch?
That's why I recommend keeping in touch with your clients with a periodic newsletter or ezine that gives them small doses of useful information. Don't overwhelm them with long, detailed messages. Just give them a taste of what you can do to make their life easier.
